I recently got my hands on a Kiribati driving license, and I thought I’d share the process with you all. It was a bit of an adventure, so buckle up!

Getting Started

First, I had to figure out where to start. Turns out, if you’re applying for the first time, you need a provisional driving license form. I collected mine from the Licensing Office – Highway Authority. They charged me AUD$1.50 for it. Not too bad, right? After that, I filled out the form. It was pretty straightforward, nothing too complicated.

Dealing with the Traffic Unit

Next, I took my completed form to the Traffic Unit at the Kiribati Police Service in Betio. I found out that you need to be at least 17 years old to get a driver’s license in Kiribati. Good to know for any youngsters out there!

Application Process

The application process itself was surprisingly fast and simple. I completed an application form for an International Driving Permit (IDP). Then, I attached a copy of my valid driver’s license from back home, my handwritten signature, and a color ID photo. Just like the locals, I made sure my license was written in the Roman alphabet, otherwise, I would have needed an IDP.

Residency and Driving

For those of you planning to stay in Kiribati for work or residency, you’ll need to get a local driving license to drive legally. This part was a bit more involved, but I managed to navigate it.

Extra Tips

  • Make sure you have a valid driver’s license from your home country.
  • You must be at least 18 years old to apply for an International Driving Permit.
  • Kiribati drives on the left side of the road, so keep that in mind if you’re used to driving on the right.

Final Thoughts

Getting a driving license in Kiribati was an interesting experience. It’s always good to understand the local rules and regulations. It took some time and effort, but eventually I successfully completed the whole process! Now, I can drive around Kiribati, no problem. Hope this helps anyone looking to do the same!
