Alright, so you wanna go to Iceland, huh? That cold place with all the ice and stuff. Heard it’s pretty, though. But you need a visa, they tell me. Never needed one of them things myself, just stayed put in my little corner of the world. But for you young folks gallivanting around, it’s different, I guess.

So, first things first, what kind of visa you needin’? They got all sorts, like for a short visit or a longer stay. Kinda like when folks come visitin’ me – some stay for a cup of tea, others stay the whole dang week! You gotta figure that out first. They call it “select the visa type” or some such fancy talk. Just means, decide how long you wanna be freezin’ your butt off over there. And it ain’t cheap, you know. They got these “visa fees” they talk about. Money, money, money, that’s all they care about these days.

Then, you gotta get your papers together. Lots of papers! Birth certificate, passport, bank statements – Lord, it’s a whole pile! They call ‘em “documents required”. Reminds me of when I had to get my Social Security sorted out. Took me forever! Make sure you got all them papers straight, or they’ll send ya right back home quicker than a fly on a hot stove. They want to see you got enough money to not be a bother, I reckon. And they wanna know you ain’t gonna cause no trouble.

Now, where to go to get this visa thing done? They say you can go to an embassy or a consulate. Big fancy buildings, I bet. Or some visa application center, whatever that is. Sounds like a lot of runnin’ around to me. They say some of these places use “service providers” to help with the applications. More folks sticking their hands in your pockets, if you ask me. But you gotta do what you gotta do, I guess. Just make sure you find out where you gotta go. They call it “where to lodge your application,” like you’re putting somethin’ in a safe deposit box or somethin’.

  • First, you gotta decide what kind of visa you want. Short visit or long visit, that’s the question.
  • Second, get all your papers together. Birth certificate, passport, bank stuff, the whole shebang.
  • Third, find out where to take all them papers. Embassy, consulate, application center, whatever they call it.

And don’t be in a hurry, ’cause it takes time. They say it can take anywhere from 15 days to 45 days, maybe even more. That’s a month and a half! You could grow a whole garden in that time! They call it “processing time”. Sounds like they’re makin’ sausages or somethin’. So plan ahead, don’t wait till the last minute, or you’ll be missin’ your boat, or plane, or whatever it is you’re takin’ to that Iceland place. They call it “Long-term Iceland visa process” if you’re stayin’ a while. And they only let you do that once a year, so don’t go thinkin’ you can move there permanent like. They do check to see if you’ve applied before it seems.

Now, they also got this thing called a Schengen visa. Sounds foreign, don’t it? Seems like it lets you travel around to other places in Europe, not just Iceland. If you’re plannin’ on hoppin’ around, you might need one of them. But that’s more papers and more money, I bet. So be sure you need it afore you go applyin’ for it. They have information about it too, so make sure to look it all up. They tell me it’s for “short stays” but short to them might be a long time to us, you know?

Fillin’ out the form is another thing. They got forms for everything these days. Can’t just shake a man’s hand and call it a deal anymore. You can fill it out online, they say, or at the embassy. Just make sure you put everything in right, or they’ll send it right back. And they’ll ask you all sorts of questions, like where you’re stayin’ and how long and why you’re goin’. Just tell ‘em the truth, I always say. Though sometimes the truth ain’t what they wanna hear, is it? So you write it all down on their application form. Fill it out right though, or they will make you do it again, and nobody wants that.

They say Iceland is pretty good about givin’ out visas. High approval rate, they call it. But that don’t mean you can just waltz in there without doin’ your homework. You gotta follow the rules, get your papers straight, and pay your fees. Then maybe, just maybe, they’ll let you go freeze your toes off in that Iceland place. Just remember what I told ya, and you might just be alright. And don’t forget to send me a postcard!

And that’s about all I know about gettin’ a visa for Iceland. Hope it helps ya. It’s a whole lot more complicated than plantin’ potatoes, that’s for sure. But if you do it right, you’ll be sippin’ hot cocoa and lookin’ at glaciers afore you know it. Just be patient and persistent, that’s the key to most things in life, I reckon.
