Alright, so I had to get a visa for American Samoa. Let me tell you, it was a bit of a journey, but I got through it and I’m here to share my experience.
First off, I did some digging and found out that there are basically two things you need to get into American Samoa as a foreigner: Entry Permits and OK Boards. I focused on the Entry Permit since that seemed like the main thing.
Then I stumbled upon something called the Entry Permit Waiver Program. Apparently, it lets folks from certain countries visit without an entry permit or visa for 30 days. I checked the list, but my country wasn’t on it. Bummer, had to go through the full process.

- I found out that if you’re a foreigner, you generally need a 30-Day Permit.
- This permit is good for, you guessed it, 30 days.
- Kids under five don’t need one, which is good to know for families.
Next, I looked into how to actually apply. The information I found mentioned booking appointments online. It said that visa week appointments would be available through an online portal. I went to the portal, and I started to prepare all the documents I needed. I kept an eye out for the November 2024 visa week in Apia.
While I was figuring out the visa stuff, I also did a bit of reading about American Samoa itself. It looks absolutely beautiful. I read that they’re a group of islands in the Samoan archipelago. I saw pictures of these gorgeous green islands, and I started to get even more excited about the trip.
I also learned a little about the local culture. It seems like American Samoa is a U.S. territory, while Samoa is an independent country. I also found this tidbit about traditional homes called “fale.” You’re supposed to sit on the floor and cross your legs before talking or eating. Good to know!
Finally, after filling out forms, gathering documents, and waiting, I finally made it through the process. It took some time and effort, but I eventually got my visa.
So, there you have it. My adventure in getting an American Samoa visa. If you’re planning a trip, make sure to do your research and give yourself plenty of time to get everything sorted. It’s totally worth it, though. I’m so excited to finally experience these islands!
