Okay, so, I recently had this little adventure of getting my driver’s license in the Solomon Islands, and let me tell you, it was a bit of a process. I thought I’d share my experience here, just in case anyone else is planning to do the same.
First off, I had to make sure I was old enough. Turns out, you gotta be at least 16 to even apply for a learner’s permit in the Solomon Islands. I was good on that front, fortunately.
Next, I had to get a medical check-up. This involved getting some forms, filling them out, and then going to a doctor to make sure I was fit to drive. It wasn’t too bad, just a bit of running around to different offices.

After that, I gathered all my necessary documents, like my ID and proof of address. This part was a bit of a headache, honestly. I had to make sure I had the right versions and everything was up to date. I spent a good chunk of time just sorting through papers and making copies.
Then came the fun part – choosing what type of license I wanted. I went for a regular car license, but there were options for motorbikes and other vehicles too. I filled out the application form, which had all sorts of questions about my personal details and driving history, even though I didn’t have any driving history yet!
- Step 1: Find the right application form for a driving license.
- Step 2: Fill out the application form completely.
- Step 3: Double check every section before submitting.
Once the application was in, I had to study up for the written test. They gave me this booklet with all the road rules and traffic signs. It was a lot to take in, but I spent a few days just cramming as much as I could. The written test itself wasn’t too hard, mostly multiple-choice questions. I passed it on my first try, which was a relief.
Then came the actual driving test. I had to schedule an appointment with an examiner, and then we went out on the road. I was pretty nervous, but I just tried to remember everything I had learned. We drove around for about 30 minutes, and I had to do things like parallel parking and three-point turns. It was nerve-wracking, but I managed to pass!
Getting My License
After passing the driving test, I had to go back to the licensing office, pay some fees, and get my photo taken. Then, they printed my temporary license on the spot! A few weeks later, I received my permanent one in the mail. I felt like dancing at that moment.
It was definitely a journey, but I’m so glad I finally have my Solomon Islands driver’s license. Now, I can explore this beautiful country on my own terms. If you’re thinking about getting your license here, just be prepared for a bit of paperwork and some studying, but it’s totally worth it in the end!
