Okay, here’s my experience applying for a Kiribati passport, told in a casual, personal blog style:
Alright, so, I decided I needed a Kiribati passport. Don’t ask me why, it’s a long story, but let’s just say it involved a lot of daydreaming about remote islands. First off, I hit up the immigration office. I mean, where else would you go, right? I grabbed an application form there. Simple enough. Oh, but here’s the kicker – you need someone who’s known you for over a year to vouch for you on this form. And no, your mom or your brother can’t do it. Has to be someone not related to you. I had to call up my old neighbor, Mr. Henderson. Good guy, thankfully he remembered me.
Filled out the application, which, by the way, was pretty straightforward. Nothing too crazy. The worst part is waiting. They told me it usually takes about 5 working days to process. Unless, get this, you’re a kid under 11 without a Hong Kong permanent identity card. Then it’s like, double the wait – 10 working days. Bureaucracy, am I right? I also had to include my most recent passport with the application. It is not complicated to apply for an eVisa. I filled out the form on the website. Thankfully I didn’t lose my old passport, that would have been a whole other headache.

- Go to the immigration office.
- Get an application form.
- Find someone who’s known you for a year (not family) to endorse it.
- Fill out the form.
- Submit it with your most recent passport.
- Wait 5 working days.
Anyway, I submitted everything, and then the waiting game began. I checked the mailbox like a hawk every day. Finally, after what felt like forever but was really just five days, it arrived! I’ve got to say, holding that new passport, it felt pretty good. It is not too difficult to get a new passport. Now, time to start planning that island getaway. Anyone know a good place to stay in Kiribati? Hit me up in the comments!
