Order Federated States of Micronesia Drivers License: Quick and Simple Process Explained

Okay, so a while back I got this idea in my head that I absolutely needed a driver’s license from the Federated States of Micronesia. Don’t even ask me why, I just did. So, I started digging around to figure out how to get one.

First, I had to find out what exactly I needed to do. Turns out, it’s not as simple as just filling out a form. If you’re a citizen, you need your FSM passport and an I-94 form. I’m not a citizen, so that was a dead end for me.

Then, I thought maybe I could get an International Driving Permit (IDP) since I heard those were easier to get. I looked into it, and apparently, if you have a valid Micronesia national driver’s license, getting an IDP is pretty easy. But I didn’t have a Micronesia license to start with, so that was another dead end.

• Checked the requirements for citizens: Needed an FSM passport and I-94, but I’m not a citizen.
• Looked into International Driving Permits: Easy to get if you have a Micronesia license, which I didn’t.

Next, I stumbled upon some information about needing a U.S. passport valid for at least 180 days to enter the FSM, along with an FSM Immigration Arrival and Departure Record and an FSM Customs Form. That got me thinking, maybe I could just go there and try to get a license as a visitor.

I did some more digging and found out that in many cases, nonimmigrants can apply for a driver’s license in the U.S., but you gotta check with the local DMV and a DSO (Designated School Official) before applying. And they need all sorts of documents to prove how long you’re staying, like an EAD card. Sounded like a hassle to me.

Finally, I came across a forum post where someone said that no U.S. state recognizes these so-called “international driving licenses,” and that no license can just be converted or exchanged. That was a real bummer.

So, after all that digging, I realized that getting a driver’s license from the Federated States of Micronesia is pretty much impossible unless you’re a citizen or you’re willing to jump through a million hoops. I guess I’ll just have to put that dream on hold for now.

The journey to nowhere

It was a wild goose chase, but hey, at least I learned a lot about the process, even if it was just to find out I couldn’t do it. I went from thinking it might be a simple form to realizing it’s a whole bureaucratic maze. It is just one of those things I was curious about that ended in disappointment.
