Today, I will share my experience of applying for a New Zealand ID card. It was quite a journey, and I hope this may be helpful to you all.
First things first, I had to figure out what kind of ID I actually needed. I did some digging online and found out about the Kiwi Access Card. It seems to be a widely accepted form of ID in New Zealand, proving both age and identity. So I thought, “Okay, that’s the one for me.”
Next, I needed to get my hands on an application form. I found out that I could either pick one up at a local NZ PostShop or download it from the website. I chose the latter option, as I preferred to have it on hand before going anywhere.

Then came the important part – preparing the required documents. The application form stated that I needed either a current New Zealand Driver’s License or a New Zealand Passport (current or less than 2 years expired). I had a driver’s license, so I thought I was all set. But just to be safe, I also gathered my passport, which was a bit old but still within the 2-year window.
I also made sure I had proof of address. A recent utility bill did the trick, I think. And of course, I needed a couple of passport-sized photos. I had some taken at a local photo shop, just to make sure they met all the requirements.
Now, with the form filled out and all documents in order, I headed to a participating NZ PostShop. I found a list of locations on their website. The process at the PostShop was pretty straightforward. I handed over my application, documents, and photos, and paid the $60 fee. They took a quick look at everything, and then told me that I should receive my card in the mail within 2 to 3 weeks.
And that was it! Now I’m just waiting for my Kiwi Access Card to arrive in the mail. Hopefully, it won’t take too long. I’ll update you all when I get it.
Recap of what I did:
- Figured out I needed a Kiwi Access Card.
- Downloaded the application form from the NZ Post website.
- Gathered necessary documents: Driver’s License, Passport, Proof of Address, and Passport-sized photos.
- Went to a participating NZ PostShop.
- Submitted the application and paid the fee.
- Now waiting for the card to arrive in the mail.
It wasn’t too complicated, but I definitely had to do some research and make sure I had everything in order. I hope this helps anyone else looking to get a New Zealand ID card!
