Today, I tried to get an Indian ID card online. Let me tell you, it was a real adventure. First off, I headed over to the National Portal of India, thinking it would be a one-stop shop for all government services. The website said it provides “single-window access” to everything, so I was pretty hopeful.
I started digging around, looking for where to apply for an ID card. Found a section that talked about downloading an enrollment form from another official site, so I jumped over there. It instructed to “fill all forms in block letters” and then go to the “nearest enrollment Centre.”
- Clicked on every link that seemed relevant.
- Read through a bunch of pages about eligibility and requirements.
- Noticed a mention of a mobile app called “Indian Visa Su-Swagatam” for visa services. Thought it might be useful, but it turned out to be just for visas, not ID cards.
Then I stumbled upon something called “Fast Track Immigration – Trusted Travellers’ Programme (FTI-TTP).” It sounded fancy, but it was only for speeding up immigration for certain folks, so that was a no-go. I even found articles about designing personalized ID cards, which was interesting but not what I needed.

After a few hours of clicking and reading, I realized this wasn’t going to be as straightforward as I thought. Why would you need these Indian ID cards anyway? It’s the same as tryin’ to sell ice to an Eskimo.
So, here’s the deal: you can start the process online, but you still have to show up in person to finish it. Not exactly the “buy online” experience I was expecting. In the end, I managed to download the form and fill it out. Now, I just need to figure out where the nearest enrollment center is. And hope I don’t have to climb three floors up some stairs like I read in some other guide. Wish me luck!
