Get Your Samoa Passport: Where to Buy It Easily

Okay, so, I’ve been wanting to get a Samoan passport for a while now. It’s not as straightforward as renewing my old one, so I had to do some digging. I started with a search to see what the requirements were.

Seems like the main way is through naturalization. Basically, you gotta live there for at least five years and be a “good person” – whatever that means! I started to feel tired, I didn’t expect it to be so difficult.

I found some official-looking documents about applying for a first passport. I went through all the stuff about renewing, replacing, and the different forms. It’s all handled by the Immigration Division under the Prime Minister’s Department in Apia, the capital. I heard that I need to register between 9:00 am and 12:00 pm.

I felt a little lost at this point because I hadn’t been to Samoa before. So, I started looking for the passport office in Apia. I found an application guide for American Samoa’s passport office, but I need the one for Samoa. Eventually, I found that they only have a single passport office in Apia for renewals, which is not what I needed.

There’s something called a “Document of Identity,” or DOI, which is also in the application instructions. I’m not sure what that is, but I bookmarked it just in case.

The official website talked a lot about their objective to make getting a passport “as simple as possible”. I don’t know about that! I hope it’s simpler than this research process.

Next, I tried to find people who had actually gone through this process. I found some forums and blogs where people shared their experiences. Some said it was pretty easy, others said it was a nightmare. It seems like it really depends on your individual circumstances.

After a few days of this, I finally felt like I had a decent grasp of what I needed to do. I made a checklist:

• Residency: I gotta figure out how to live in Samoa for five years.
• Good Character: I need to understand what they consider “good character” and how to prove it.
• Application: I need to get the actual application forms and fill them out correctly.
• DOI: I need to figure out what this Document of Identity is and if I need it.
• Appointment: I need to find out how to make an appointment at the passport office in Apia.
