Hey everyone, so I’ve been wanting to share this for a while, and I finally got around to sorting through my notes. I recently went through the process of getting a Cayman Islands driving license, and let me tell you, it was quite the experience.

First things first, I’m over 18, obviously you gotta be to even think about driving. I knew I needed a license because I’m planning on staying here for a good while, longer than six months. So, I started digging around to figure out what I needed to do.

I found out that you gotta take a test, both written and driving, no shortcuts there. I went online, trying to find resources. They talked about some “My DVDL e-Services” thing, and needing an ESID number. I guess you can renew your license online, but I needed to get one first. I’ll cross that bridge when I come to it, I guess.

Getting Ready for the Written Test

The written test, from what I gathered, is a 40-question multiple-choice thing. They give you four options for each question, and you pick the right one. It’s all about road signs, road markings, general driving knowledge, that sort of stuff. They have this “Official Road Code” that you’re supposed to study. It sounds pretty dry, but hey, gotta do what you gotta do.

  • Studying the Road Code: I spent a few evenings with that book. It wasn’t exactly a page-turner, but I made sure I understood the basics.
  • Making an Appointment: Then it was time to schedule the test. It’s all pretty straightforward, you just have to get an appointment.

Taking the Written Test

The day of the test, I was a little nervous, not gonna lie. But I went in, took the test on one of those touch screen computers. Some questions were easy, some were a bit tricky. I just took my time, read each question carefully, and picked the best answer. And guess what? I passed! Felt pretty good, I’ll admit.

The Driving Test and Fees

Next up was the actual driving test. I practiced a bit, you know, just to brush up on my skills. The driving test itself was pretty standard. Drove around with an examiner, followed their instructions, all that jazz. And, I passed that too! Double win!

Now, about the fees. It depends on what kind of license you’re getting. For mine, which is for regular cars, it was either $75 for three years or $125 for five years. I went with the five-year one, figured it was a better deal in the long run.

So there you have it. That’s how I got my Cayman Islands driving license. It was a process, but I got through it. Now I can legally drive here, which is pretty awesome. If any of you are planning on doing the same, hopefully, my little story here helps you out. Just remember to study that Road Code!
